Overhead cranes move massive, multi-tonne loads directly above busy factory floors. A misjudged load swing, a poorly slung component, or failing to understand the hoist limit switch can lead to catastrophic dropped loads and fatal crush injuries. The NPORS Overhead Crane (N104) course ensures your operatives can safely control these powerful machines, counteract load swing, and adhere strictly to LOLER and BS 7121 regulations.

Description
Course Overview
This comprehensive training program is essential for operatives working in heavy manufacturing, steel fabrication, pre-cast concrete plants, and large-scale engineering workshops.
Delivered either at our 84-acre Huddersfield training facility or directly at your factory or warehouse, this course covers all aspects of overhead crane operation. Candidates will master the specific controls of your machinery, whether it is cab-mounted, pendant-controlled, or operated via remote control. The training heavily emphasizes setting up strict exclusion zones, communicating seamlessly with slinger signallers, interpreting duty charts, and mastering the critical skill of counteracting dangerous load swings.
What You Will Learn
Upon successful completion, candidates will be fully competent in:
Legislation & Lift Planning: Understanding legal obligations under PUWER, LOLER, the Health & Safety at Work Act 1974, and the BS 7121 Safe Use of Cranes guidelines.
Pre-Operational Precision: Conducting thorough daily checks on the gantry runners, hoist ropes, drums, limit switches, crane brakes, and all remote/pendant control functions.
Safe Lifting Operations: Successfully lifting unbalanced loads, moving loads diagonally across the working area, and safely executing "out-of-sight" lifts using radio protocols and hand signals.
Hazard & Swing Management: Identifying proximity hazards, maintaining safe load travel heights (150mm during specific maneuvers), and executing immediate actions to recover and control load swing.
End of Shift: Safely parking the hoist trolley, ensuring no loads are left suspended, isolating the main power switch, and securely stowing the pendant/remote control.
Course Durations & Eligibility
Novice Course Duration: 3 Days (Allowing for intensive practice in load control, swing recovery, and blind lifting).
Class Ratio: Maximum 3 Learners : 1 Instructor : 1 Machine.
Experienced Worker Tests (EWT): A 1-day assessment is available for a maximum of 4 experienced operators who require formal NPORS certification or ticket renewal.
Testing & Certification
Candidates must pass an NPORS theoretical examination containing 25 questions, requiring an 80% pass mark. They must also pass a rigorous 1 hour 10 minute practical assessment. The practical test requires candidates to safely lift an unbalanced load, move a 4-metre-long load diagonally across the working area, negotiate a tight restriction with a 2-tonne load kept at a maximum height of 150mm, and execute a blind lift using only signals.
Upon successful completion, candidates will receive an NPORS Operator Card and certificate endorsing them for Overhead Crane (N104)
