Brief Summary Order pickers are the engine room of fast-moving consumer goods (FMCG) and e-commerce distribution centres. However, the pressure to meet high pick-rates often leads to dangerous operating habits. Turning at speed, navigating uneven ground, or misunderstanding the machine's load centre can immediately cause lateral instability and severe tipping accidents.

Description
Course Overview
This highly focused training program is essential for operatives working in active distribution hubs, retail warehouses, and complex storage facilities.
Delivered either at our fully equipped Huddersfield training facility or directly within your active warehouse aisles, this course bridges the gap between basic lifting and advanced order picking operations. Candidates will master the unique steering dynamics of the machine, including operating the tiller arm and pressure pad safely. The training heavily emphasizes executing perfect 90° turns, navigating tight chicanes, and maintaining longitudinal stability when travelling fully laden.
What You Will Learn
Upon successful completion, candidates will be fully competent in:
Legislation & Risk Assessment: Understanding their strict legal obligations under the Health & Safety at Work Act 1974, PUWER, LOLER, and the L117 Approved Code of Practice.
Pre-Operational Precision: Conducting thorough daily checks on the forks, carriage, mast, lift chains, hydraulics, and battery systems.
Manoeuvring & Stability: Safely traveling in open and confined areas, navigating ramps and low headroom, and understanding the "see-saw effect" of uneven loads.
High-Level Order Picking: Carrying out accurate order picking tasks at ground level, eye level, high level, and directly in front of a vertical racking face.
Hazard Management: Checking the condition of the racking against the SEMA code, identifying overhead power lines, and verifying load centres before lifting.
End of Shift: Safely parking the lift truck, placing forks on the ground, engaging the neutral/parking brake, removing the key, and correctly placing the machine on charge.
Course Durations & Eligibility
Novice Course Duration: 3 Days (Allowing for intensive practice in hydraulic operations, stacking, and manoeuvring).
Class Ratio: Maximum 3 Learners : 1 Instructor : 1 Machine.
Refresher Course Duration: 1 Day (Designed to update trained operators on current regulations and procedures).
Experienced Worker Tests (EWT): A 1-day assessment is available for a maximum of 4 experienced operators who require formal NPORS certification.
Testing & Certification
Candidates must pass an NPORS theoretical examination containing 25 questions, requiring an 80% pass mark. They must also pass a strict practical assessment. The practical test requires candidates to drive the lift truck through a tight chicane forward and reverse, align accurately in a working aisle, and successfully bulk stack and de-stack loads at varying heights without touching the racking.
Upon successful completion, candidates will receive an NPORS Operator Card and certificate endorsing them for Order Picker (N005).
