Very Narrow Aisle (VNA) Lift Trucks are designed to maximize warehouse storage capacity by operating in incredibly tight spaces and lifting loads to extreme heights. However, operating a "man-up" cab 10 metres in the air while navigating wire or rail-guided aisles carries severe risks. A misjudged tilt, ignoring a load centre, or failing to understand emergency evacuation procedures can result in catastrophic racking collapses or fatal falls.

      Description

      Course Overview

This highly specialized training program is essential for operatives working in high-density distribution centres, cold storage facilities, and major logistics hubs.

Delivered either at our fully equipped Huddersfield training facility or directly within your active warehouse aisles, this course focuses on extreme precision. Candidates will master the unique characteristics of VNA trucks, including rail/wire guidance systems, jockey wheels, and operating from elevated "man-up" cabs. The training heavily emphasizes longitudinal and lateral stability, calculating load centres, and safely negotiating bulk stacking and racking systems at ground, eye, and high levels.

      What You Will Learn

Upon successful completion, candidates will be fully competent in:

      • Legislation & Risk Assessment: Understanding legal obligations under PUWER, LOLER, and specifically the ACOP L117 guidelines for rider-operated lift trucks.

      • Pre-Operational Precision: Conducting thorough daily checks on the mast, carriage, lift chains, guide systems, interlocks, and critical emergency evacuation equipment (for man-up machines).

      • Advanced Manoeuvring: Executing perfectly aligned 90° turns into and out of narrow transfer aisles, managing pivot points, and navigating chicanes without impacting guard rails or uprights.

      • High-Level Stacking Operations: Accurately stacking and de-stacking loads in pallet racking at various heights (up to the company's maximum operating height), ensuring forks are perfectly centralized and level to prevent racking damage.

      • System Operations: Understanding when it is permissible to rotate forks, engaging wire or rail guide systems correctly, and strictly following emergency breakdown and descent protocols.

      • End of Shift: Safely parking the truck (either in the aisle or charging bay), lowering the cab, relaxing hydraulics, and correctly engaging the charging procedures.

      Course Durations & Eligibility

      • Novice Course Duration: 5 Days (37.5 hours of intensive training, required for operators with no previous lift truck experience).

      • Existing / Untrained Operator Duration: 3 Days (20 hours of training for operators with some experience but no formal qualifications).

      • Refresher Course Duration: 1 Day (7.5 hours).

      • Class Ratio: Maximum 3 Learners : 1 Instructor : 1 Truck.

      Testing & Certification

Candidates must pass an NPORS theoretical examination containing 25 questions (requiring an 80% pass mark). They must also pass a rigorous practical assessment. The practical test requires candidates to navigate a tight chicane, enter a narrow aisle, and successfully stack and de-stack pallets at ground, eye, and high levels without making any contact with the racking or loads.

Upon successful completion, candidates will receive an NPORS Operator Card and certificate endorsing them for Narrow Aisle Lift Truck (N007).
