Scissor lifts provide a massive, stable working platform that allows multiple operatives and heavy materials to safely access high-level work areas. However, because they lift vertically, they are incredibly susceptible to lateral tip-overs if driven over uneven ground, operated in high winds, or if the safe working load is exceeded. The NPORS MEWP Scissor (N109) course ensures your operatives are fully compliant and hyper-aware of their surroundings.

Description
Course Overview
This intensive 1-day training program is an absolute must for M&E contractors, warehouse fit-out teams, steel erectors, and facilities maintenance crews working at height.
Delivered either at our 84-acre Huddersfield training facility or directly on your active site, this course bridges the gap between basic driving and advanced high-level safety. Candidates will master the unique steering and hydraulic lift controls of the scissor lift. The training heavily emphasizes safely using the platform extension deck, managing stability on inclines, understanding secondary guarding devices, and adhering strictly to the Work at Height Regulations and HSE GS6 (overhead hazards).
What You Will Learn
Upon successful completion, candidates will be fully competent in:
Legislation & Risk Assessment: Understanding legal obligations under PUWER, LOLER, the Work at Height Regulations, and the critical dangers of suspension trauma and overhead power lines.
Pre-Operational Precision: Conducting thorough daily checks on fluid levels, wheels, limit switches, secondary guarding devices, and tilt alarms.
Emergency Systems: Fully understanding and demonstrating the machine's emergency lowering devices and site rescue plans.
Manoeuvring & Stability: Safely traveling on level ground and inclines, navigating confined areas, and safely deploying stabiliser legs or ground support pads (where applicable).
High-Level Access: Operating hydraulic lift controls smoothly to elevate the platform to a minimum of 75% of the machine's maximum lifting height, effectively using the sliding deck extension, and monitoring safe working loads and wind speeds.
End of Shift: Executing safe parking, fully lowering the platform, isolating the controls, and completing battery charging or refuelling procedures.
Course Durations & Eligibility
Novice Course Duration: 1 Day.
Class Ratio (Novice): Maximum 4 Learners : 1 Instructor : 1 Machine.
Experienced Worker Tests (EWT): A 1-day assessment is available for up to 6 experienced operators who require formal NPORS ticket renewal (subject to 3+3 dispensation rules).
Testing & Certification
Candidates must pass a comprehensive NPORS theoretical examination (requiring an 80% pass mark) and a rigorous practical assessment. The practical test requires candidates to navigate a tight chicane forward and reverse, safely elevate to target points representing at least 75% of the machine's maximum capability, and extend the sliding deck accurately.
Upon successful completion, candidates will receive an NPORS Operator Card and certificate endorsing them for MEWP Scissor (N109).
