Lorry Loaders (often referred to generically as HIABs) are essential for delivering heavy materials directly to site, but they carry massive risks regarding vehicle stability, overhead power lines, and crushing hazards. The NPORS Lorry Loader (N107) course ensures your drivers aren't just moving freight; they are certified lifting professionals. It equips them to safely deploy stabilisers, manage complex loads, and operate various attachments without risking a vehicle tip-over or catastrophic crush injury.

      Description

      Course Overview

This intensive training program is an absolute must for haulage firms, builders' merchants, and logistics companies delivering heavy plant, bricks, or raw materials to active construction sites.

Delivered either at our 84-acre Huddersfield training facility or directly at your depot using your own fleet, this course covers the critical safety aspects of lorry loader operation. Candidates will master lifting duties, focusing heavily on configuring the vehicle, deploying standard and "swing-up" stabilisers safely, and understanding Rated Capacity Indicators (RCI) and Load Moment Indicators (LMI).

      What You Will Learn

Upon successful completion, candidates will be fully competent in:

      • Legislation & Risk Assessment: Understanding legal obligations under HASAWA 1974, PUWER, LOLER, BS7121 part 4, and GS6 (Overhead Power Lines).

      • Pre-Operational Precision: Conducting thorough checks on hydraulic oil, rams, pipes, instruments, and safety locking devices, including hooks, slings, and attachments.

      • Stabiliser Deployment: Safely deploying and stowing stabilisers on uneven ground, with a critical focus on mitigating the severe crush risks associated with "swing-up" stabilisers.

      • Load Management: Identifying weights and centres of gravity, minimizing load swing, and accurately positioning loads both onto the vehicle and at designated drop-off points.

      • Attachments & Accessories: Safely fitting, removing, and operating various attachments including clamshell buckets (grabs), crane swivel hooks, brick/block clamps, and vehicle lifting frames.

      • End of Shift: Executing safe parking, retracting the jib and stabilisers securely for transport, and isolating the machine.

      Course Durations & Eligibility

      • Novice Course Duration: 2 Days (A rapid, highly focused upskilling block).

      • Class Ratio (Novice): Maximum 3 Learners : 1 Instructor : 1 Machine.

      • Experienced Worker Tests (EWT): A 1-day assessment is available for up to 4 experienced operators requiring a ticket renewal.

      Testing & Certification

Candidates must pass an NPORS theoretical examination (requiring an 80% pass mark) and a rigorous practical assessment. The practical test requires candidates to accurately set up the vehicle, test the RCI/LMI, and lift loads at varying radii and full horizontal reach without compromising vehicle stability or entering exclusion zones.

Upon successful completion, candidates will receive an NPORS Operator Card and certificate endorsing them for Lorry Loader (N107).
