Log Handlers are massive, highly specialized machines designed to grip, lift, and transport tonnes of raw timber. In busy sawmills, biomass plants, or active forestry environments, the unpredictable weight distribution of raw logs means that dropped loads or machine rollovers are a constant, fatal risk. Our NPORS Log Handler (N106) course transforms operators into precision timber handlers. It guarantees they can safely operate log grabs and attachments, maintain absolute stability on rough terrain.

      Description

      Course Overview

This comprehensive training program is essential for operators working in timber yards, commercial sawmills, biomass energy plants, and heavy forestry operations.

Delivered either at our purpose-built 84-acre Huddersfield training facility or directly on your active timber yard, this intensive course covers the critical safety aspects of heavy log handling. Candidates will master the unique hydraulic controls required to safely grip irregular loads. The training places a massive emphasis on configuring the machine for safe travel across varying, uneven terrain, safely stacking and destacking raw timber, and safely changing attachments.

      What You Will Learn

Upon successful completion, candidates will be fully competent in:

      • Legislation & Risk Assessment: Understanding legal obligations under HASAWA 1974, PUWER, LOLER, and industry-specific forestry/timber yard safety guidelines.

      • Pre-Operational Precision: Locating major components and conducting thorough daily checks on steering, braking, and the high-pressure hydraulic lines powering the log grab attachments.

      • Manoeuvring & Stability: Safely configuring the machine for travel and maneuvering it safely across varying, rough terrain in both open and confined yard spaces.

      • Timber Handling & Stacking: Safely extracting logs, performing precise stacking and destacking tasks, and ensuring loads are secure before movement.

      • Attachments & Transport: Safely fitting and removing log handling attachments, and securely loading/unloading logs onto external transporting vehicles and flatbeds.

      • End of Shift: Navigating safe loading/unloading for machine transportation and executing proper shutdown and secure parking procedures.

      Course Durations & Eligibility

      • Novice Course Duration: 5 Days (Ensures maximum seat time to master the complex hydraulic grabs).

      • Class Ratio (Novice): Maximum 3 Learners : 1 Instructor : 1 Machine.

      • Experienced Worker Tests (EWT): A 1-day assessment is available for up to 4 experienced operators who require formal NPORS certification or ticket renewal.

      Testing & Certification

Candidates must pass an NPORS theoretical examination and a rigorous practical assessment. The practical test requires candidates to successfully inspect the machine, navigate rough terrain, securely grip and transfer timber loads, and safely load an external vehicle while maintaining total machine stability.

Upon successful completion, candidates will receive an NPORS Operator Card and certificate endorsing them for Log Handler (N106).
