Tracked loading shovels deliver unmatched pushing power and traction on rough terrain, making them vital for heavy earthmoving and demolition. For novices, mastering the unique centre of gravity and track controls is critical to prevent catastrophic tip-overs. Our NPORS Tracked Loading Shovel Novice course transforms complete beginners into competent, safety-conscious operators. It ensures strict adherence to PUWER and LOLER, equipping your new hires to safely extract and load in high-risk environments.

      Description

      Course Overview

This comprehensive, multi-day training program is designed specifically for beginners with little to no prior heavy plant experience, making it essential for contractors in the demolition, quarrying, and civil engineering sectors.

Delivered either at our purpose-built Huddersfield training facility or directly on your active site, this intensive course blends essential theoretical safety with extensive hands-on "seat time." Candidates will learn the fundamental mechanics of tracked machines, focusing heavily on track tensioning procedures and configuring the machine for safe travel over uncompacted ground. The training heavily emphasizes quick-hitch coupler safety, managing lateral stability on steep inclines, and executing precise face extractions without compromising site safety.

      What You Will Learn

Upon successful completion, candidates will be fully competent in:

      • Legislation & Risk Assessment: Understanding legal obligations under PUWER, LOLER, HSG47 (Underground Services), GS6 (Overhead power lines), and the Construction (Design & Management) Regulations.

      • Pre-Operational Inspections: Conducting strict daily checks on component serviceability, understanding track tensioning limits, and verifying ROPS/FOPS structural integrity.

      • Manoeuvring & Stability: Safely traveling across varying terrains and steep inclines, and understanding how uncompacted surfaces and the center of gravity affect machine stability.

      • Attachment Safety: Mastering the safe installation and removal of buckets using manual and hydraulic quick-hitch couplers, including establishing mandatory exclusion zones during changes.

      • Extraction & Loading: Efficiently setting up for loading duties, safely extracting materials from stockpiles, and placing materials into hoppers and external transporting vehicles.

      • End of Shift: Safely loading/unloading the machine for external transport and executing proper shutdown, track cleaning, and secure parking procedures.

      Course Durations & Eligibility

      • Novice Course Duration: Dependent on class size to ensure maximum machine time (Typically up to 5 Days for a full class).

      • Class Ratio (Novice): Maximum 3 Learners : 1 Instructor : 1 Machine.

      Testing & Certification

Candidates must pass a thorough NPORS theoretical examination and an intensive practical driving test. The practical assessment proves their ability to safely maneuver the tracked machine on inclines, safely operate quick-hitch systems, and successfully extract and load materials in a simulated working environment.

Upon successful completion, candidates will receive an NPORS card and certificate endorsing them for Tracked Loading Shovel (C209).
