Landfill compactors are colossal machines designed to crush, compress, and level waste materials to maximize landfill lifespan and ensure site stability. Operating these heavy-duty machines requires immense skill to navigate steep, unstable slopes while managing unique environmental and biological hazards. Our NPORS Landfill Compactor (N224) course provides operators with the critical knowledge to safely spread, layer, and compact materials while maintaining total control of the machine.

Description
Course Overview
This comprehensive training program is essential for operatives working in waste management facilities, active landfill sites, and heavy earthmoving projects.
Delivered directly on your active site using your own machinery, this course grounds operators in essential health and safety legislation (including PUWER, COSHH, and the Health & Safety at Work Act 1974). Candidates will learn how to conduct rigorous daily checks on critical components such as specialized filtration systems, drums, blades, and hydraulic systems. The training heavily emphasizes the specialized techniques of material segregation, spreading cover levels, minimizing air voids, and executing safe compaction passes on steep inclines.
What You Will Learn
Upon successful completion, candidates will be fully competent in:
Legislation & Risk Assessment: Understanding the legal and environmental responsibilities of the operator, including method statements and risk assessments.
Machine Components & Controls: Identifying and explaining the functions of power units, blades, drums, ROPS/FOPS, and advanced cab filtration systems designed to protect the operator.
Pre-Operational Inspections: Executing meticulous checks on hydraulics, rams, pipes, controls, steering, and brakes before entering the tipping face.
Hazard & Environmental Management: Safely managing severe site risks including dust, noise, vibration, ground contamination, explosive gases, and biological hazards such as leptospirosis.
Compaction Operations: Preparing the machine for use, navigating hill starts, executing precise layering and compacting techniques, and managing cycles of operation.
End of Shift & Decontamination: Safely parking, securing attachments, and thoroughly cleaning the machine to avoid corrosion and prevent personal contamination.
Course Durations & Eligibility
Novice Course Duration: 5 Days (Intensive training for beginners).
Class Ratio (Novice): Maximum 3 Learners : 1 Instructor : 1 Machine.
Refresher Tests: Maximum 3 tests per day.
Experienced Worker Tests (EWT): Maximum 4 tests per day (For highly experienced operators requiring re-certification).
Testing & Certification
Candidates must pass an NPORS theoretical examination and a highly practical test. The practical assessment will evaluate the operator's ability to safely maneuver over varying terrain, effectively spread and compact dumped material, and safely load/unload the machine for external transport.
Upon successful completion, candidates will receive an NPORS card and certificate endorsing them for Landfill Compactor (N224).
