The forward tipping dumper is a fundamental piece of equipment on any construction site, essential for the rapid movement of bulk materials. However, they are also involved in more site accidents than almost any other machine due to stability issues and poor visibility. Our NPORS Forward Tipping Dumper (N204) course provides operators with the critical skills needed to operate these machines safely and efficiently, ensuring full compliance with PUWER and LOLER regulations.

      Description

      Course Overview

Operating a dumper requires more than just driving; it requires a constant assessment of ground conditions, load distribution, and pedestrian safety. This course is designed to transition learners into competent operators who understand the machine's "stability triangle" and the extreme risks of tipping, especially when traversing slopes or discharge edges.

Training at our centre focuses on real-world site scenarios. Candidates will master machine familiarisation, conduct rigorous pre-operational checks, and learn the correct procedures for travelling laden and unladen across varying terrain. The course places a heavy emphasis on the safe interface between the dumper and other plant, such as excavators and crushers, to ensure coordinated and accident-free material handling.

      What You Will Learn

Upon successful completion, candidates will be competent in:

      •

Machine Mechanics: Locating and identifying major components including engine systems, hydraulics, transmissions, and safety controls.

      •

Pre-Operational Safety: Conducting statutory daily inspections of wheels, tyres, brakes, and steering to ensure the machine is site-ready.

      •

Safe Manoeuvring: Driving the machine forward and reverse through narrow width restrictions and across rough, undulating ground.

      •

Laden Travel: Navigating slopes and inclines safely with a full load, understanding the impact of material weight on machine stability.

      •

Discharge Excellence: Positioning the dumper correctly for loading and safely discharging material into heaps, trenches, or over edges.

      •

Attachment Management: Safely attaching and setting trailers ready for operation when required.

      •

Site Awareness: Identifying overhead and underground hazards and maintaining clear communication with other machine operators.

      Course Durations & Eligibility

      •

        Novice Duration: 3 Days.

      •

Refresher / Experienced Worker Tests (EWT): 1 Day.

      •

        Class Ratio: Maximum 3 Learners : 1 Instructor : 1 Machine.

      Testing & Certification

Candidates must pass a theoretical multiple-choice exam (80% pass mark) and a practical assessment. The practical test requires demonstrating safe setup, manoeuvring through a chicane, and successful material transport and discharge within specified safety tolerances.

Upon successful completion, candidates will receive an NPORS card and certificate endorsing them for Forward Tipping Dumper (N204).
