Making deep, square cuts in reinforced concrete, brick, and blockwork requires specialized equipment. While concrete cutting chainsaws offer incredible precision compared to standard circular disc cutters, they introduce severe risks, including violent kickback, high vibration, and lethal silica dust. Our NPORS Concrete Cutting Chainsaw (N025) course equips operators with the critical skills needed to safely inspect, handle, and operate these powerful tools while remaining fully compliant with PUWER and COS

Description
Course Overview
Operating a concrete chainsaw (such as an ICS or Stihl diamond chain saw) is a highly specialized skill used heavily in structural alterations, demolition, and utilities. Because these saws utilize water suppression and diamond-grit chains, the operational and maintenance procedures are vastly different from standard timber chainsaws or petrol cut-off saws.
This intensive 2-day course ensures that your workforce can safely start, carry, and operate the machine. Candidates will learn how to manage water delivery systems to suppress dust, execute precision cutting tasks safely, manage kickback, and properly dismantle and clean the saw to prevent hazardous concrete slurry from destroying the equipment.
What You Will Learn
Upon successful completion, candidates will be competent in:
Machine Familiarisation: Understanding the major components of a concrete chainsaw, including power units, water suppression attachments, and diamond chain tensioning systems.
Pre-Operational Checks: Conducting vital daily checks on fluid levels, chain tension, drive sprockets, and water flow in accordance with manufacturer guidelines.
Safe Handling & Operation: Mastering safe hot and cold starting procedures, safe carrying techniques, and adopting the correct stance to safely manage kickback and bar pinch.
Precision Cutting Tasks: Configuring the machine for the work area and executing controlled, precise cuts in concrete or masonry.
Hazard & Environmental Management: Setting up safe exclusion zones, managing concrete slurry, and understanding the severe risks of Hand-Arm Vibration Syndrome (HAVS) and noise.
Health & PPE: Correctly utilizing mandatory Personal and Respiratory Protective Equipment (RPE) to mitigate the deadly risks of Respirable Crystalline Silica (RCS) dust.
Maintenance & Shutdown: Safely dismantling, cleaning, and clearing up cuttings to prevent slurry from setting inside the machine's components.
Course Durations & Eligibility
Novice Duration: 2 Days (Required for candidates to master both the specialized cutting techniques and the complex daily maintenance).
Class Ratio: Maximum 4 Learners
Refresher courses are also available.
Testing & Certification
Candidates must pass a theoretical multiple-choice exam (80% pass mark) covering health and safety legislation, followed by a rigorous practical assessment. The practical test requires candidates to demonstrate safe pre-use checks, safely start and carry the machine, execute cutting tasks, and thoroughly dismantle and clean the saw.
Upon successful completion, candidates will receive an NPORS card/certificate endorsing them for Concrete Cutting Chainsaw (N025).
