Cartridge-operated tools (such as powder-actuated nail guns manufactured by Hilti or Ramset) are incredibly powerful, driving fasteners directly into solid concrete and steel. However, because they rely on explosive charges, they present severe risks—including accidental discharge, high-velocity ricochets, and noise-induced hearing damage. Our NPORS Cartridge Tool (N710) course ensures operators understand the mechanics of these high/low-velocity tools, how to select the correct explosive cartridge, and how

      Description

      Course Overview

Operating a tool that relies on an explosive powder charge is fundamentally different from using standard pneumatic or battery-operated nail guns. This intensive 1-day course is essential for dryliners, shopfitters, electricians, and construction workers who use these tools for high-speed fastening.

Candidates will receive comprehensive, hands-on training that covers the legal requirements of the Control of Noise at Work Regulations and PUWER. They will learn how to fully strip, clean, and reassemble the tool, select the correct color-coded cartridges based on base material density, and implement life-saving "misfire drills" to safely manage unspent charges.

      What You Will Learn

Upon successful completion, candidates will be competent in:

      • Tool Mechanics & Maintenance: Understanding the differences between low-velocity and high-velocity tools, completely stripping down the tool for cleaning, and inspecting the barrel, trigger, and safety guards.

      • Cartridge Selection: Understanding the color-coded cartridge power system (Grey, Brown, Green, Yellow, Red) and selecting the correct charge to prevent fastener shatter or over-penetration.

      • Safe Firing Techniques: Inspecting base materials, ensuring safe footing and correct tool angle, and safely firing fasteners into steel, concrete, or masonry.

      • Hazard & Misfire Management: Setting up front and rear exclusion zones (to protect against shoot-throughs), and executing strict emergency misfire protocols if a cartridge fails to detonate.

      • Health & PPE: Correctly utilizing mandatory PPE, including impact-rated eye protection and heavy-duty ear defenders.

      • Storage & Disposal: Accounting for all unused/spent cartridges, allowing the tool to cool, and securely locking the explosive components away at the end of a shift.

      Course Durations & Eligibility

      • Novice Duration: 1 Day

      • Class Ratio: Maximum 6 Learners : 1 Instructor : 1 Machine (Ideal for training an entire installation or shopfitting gang).

      • Refresher courses are also available.

      Testing & Certification

Candidates must pass a theoretical exam (80% pass mark) and a highly practical assessment. The practical test requires candidates to strip and reassemble the tool, accurately select cartridges, execute a series of safe fixings, and verbally explain the mandatory misfire procedure.

Upon successful completion, candidates will receive an NPORS card/certificate endorsing them for Cartridge Tool (N710).
