Lifting and transporting multi-ton vessels out of the water requires absolute precision and a deep understanding of marine lifting physics. Our NPORS Boat Hoist (N136) course is specifically designed for marine, marina, and dockside personnel. It equips operators with the critical skills required to safely configure, sling, and manoeuver boat hoists, ensuring the safety of the dockyard crew and the protection of high-value vessels.

      Description

      Course Overview

Operating a boat hoist (also known as a marine travel lift) is a highly specialized lifting operation. A single mistake in load displacement, sling placement, or sudden shock loading can result in catastrophic structural damage to the boat or the hoist itself. This comprehensive course ensures your dockside workforce complies with the Lifting Operations and Lifting Equipment Regulations (LOLER) and PUWER.

Delivered directly at your marina or boatyard using your specific equipment, this course covers the mechanical theory of the hoist alongside advanced lifting practices. Candidates will learn how to program and set the Rated Capacity Indicator (RCI/LMI) for different load duties, calculate the effects of wind/environmental conditions, and safely execute lifts from water-to-land and land-to-water.

      What You Will Learn

Upon successful completion, candidates will be competent in:

      • Machine Familiarisation: Locating and identifying the major components, power units, supporting beams, and safety systems of the specific boat hoist.

      • Pre-Operational Safety: Conducting thorough daily checks on hydraulics, cables, slings, and structural integrity in accordance with manufacturer guidelines.

      • Marine PPE & Safety: Identifying and using appropriate Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) tailored for dockside work, including buoyancy aids and eye protection.

      • Lifting & Slinging: Properly placing slings/lifting gear, understanding hull pressure points, and managing the effects of shock loading and load displacement on structural stability.

      • Safe Operation: Operating the hoist safely and efficiently, programming the RCI/LMI for varied loads, and utilizing clear communication/banksman signals during the lift.

      • Environmental Control: Assessing wind speeds, tide conditions, and other marine environmental factors that could impact the stability of the lift.

      Course Durations & Eligibility

      • Novice Duration: 3 Days (For delegates with no prior marine lifting experience).

      • Class Ratio: Maximum 3 Learners : 1 Instructor : 1 Machine (Ensuring maximum hands-on operational time).

      • Experienced Worker Tests (EWT) and Refresher courses are also available.

      Testing & Certification

Candidates must pass a written theoretical assessment (80% pass mark) covering regulations and lifting physics, followed by a rigorous practical demonstration. The practical test requires candidates to complete pre-operational checks, program the hoist, and safely execute a vessel lift and transfer.

Upon successful completion, candidates will receive an NPORS card/certificate endorsing them for Boat Hoist (N136).
