Bench saws (also known as table saws or circular saws) are indispensable tools in carpentry, construction, and forestry, but they also account for a significant number of severe site injuries, including amputations and severe kickback incidents. Our NPORS Bench Saw (N302) course provides operators with the critical knowledge and practical skills needed to safely set up, inspect, and operate a bench saw, ensuring full compliance with PUWER regulations and the safe handling of hazardous wood dust.

Description
Course Overview
Cutting timber safely on a site or in a workshop requires much more than just pushing wood through a blade. This course is designed to ensure operators understand the strict health and safety legislation surrounding woodworking machinery, including PUWER, L114, and specific HSE guidance on dust extraction (WIS36/WIS16).
Candidates will receive hands-on training on both electric and fuel-driven/PTO-driven bench saws. The course covers everything from selecting the correct blade and adjusting the riving knife, to correctly setting rip fences and executing safe cross-cutting and rip-sawing techniques. Crucially, operators will learn how to identify foreign objects in timber, safely use push sticks to protect their hands, and manage the respiratory risks associated with wood dust.
What You Will Learn
Upon successful completion, candidates will be competent in:
Pre-Operational Safety: Inspecting the blade, riving knife, top guards, extension tables, and power/PTO sources to ensure the machine is safe to use.
Safe Cutting Techniques: Properly setting rip fences and cross-cut fences, selecting timber free of foreign objects, and using push sticks safely during rip sawing and cross-cutting.
Hazard Management: Setting up safe exclusion zones, preventing kickback, and understanding the severe risks of noise, vibration, and flying debris.
Health & PPE: Correctly identifying and using mandatory Personal and Respiratory Protective Equipment (PPE/RPE) to mitigate the risks of inhaling carcinogenic wood dust.
Waste & Environmental Control: Safely removing sawdust, maintaining functional extraction systems, and disposing of trimmed materials in accordance with site policy.
Shutdown & Maintenance: Safely isolating the power source, preparing the saw for transport, and identifying blade wear or defects at the end of a shift.
Course Durations & Eligibility
Novice Duration: 1 Day
Class Ratio: Maximum 6 Learners : 1 Instructor : 1 Machine (Making this highly cost-effective for site joinery teams or workshop staff).
Refresher courses are also available.
Testing & Certification
Candidates must pass a theoretical multiple-choice exam (80% pass mark) and a rigorous practical assessment where they must demonstrate safe pre-use checks, controlled rip and cross-cutting, and correct waste/dust management.
Upon successful completion, candidates will receive an NPORS card/certificate endorsing them for Bench Saw (N302).
