Asbestos remains the single greatest cause of work-related deaths in the UK. If your team works in construction, refurbishment, maintenance, or demolition, they are at risk of disturbing hidden asbestos-containing materials (ACMs). Our NPORS Asbestos Awareness (N031) course is a vital, legally required half-day training session designed to ensure your workforce can recognize the hidden dangers of asbestos, understand the severe health risks, and know exactly what to do in an emergency to protect themselves

Description
Course Overview
Under the Control of Asbestos Regulations, any worker who is liable to be exposed to asbestos dust during their normal everyday work must receive basic awareness training. This course does not train operatives to remove asbestos, but rather equips them with the critical knowledge to avoid it safely.
Delivered in a highly engaging classroom format, this course covers the dark history of asbestos use in UK construction and its lethal respiratory consequences (such as mesothelioma and asbestosis). Candidates will learn where asbestos is most likely to be found in older buildings and plant equipment, how to interpret site surveys, and what emergency procedures must be triggered the moment a suspicious material is disturbed.
What You Will Learn
Upon successful completion, candidates will possess a strong foundational understanding of:
The Silent Killer: The nature, properties, and types of asbestos (Chrysotile, Amosite, Crocidolite), and the devastating long-term health risks associated with asbestos exposure.
Where It Hides: How to identify the likely occurrences of asbestos in buildings and plant equipment (e.g., insulating boards, pipe lagging, cement roofs, and textured coatings).
Legislation & Compliance: A clear breakdown of the Control of Asbestos Regulations, COSHH, and RIDDOR reporting requirements.
Hazard Avoidance: How to read and extract information from site asbestos registers before work commences to completely avoid exposure.
Emergency Procedures: The exact steps to take following an accidental disturbance or uncontrolled release of asbestos dust, including emergency clean-up protocols.
PPE & RPE: An overview of the required Personal and Respiratory Protective Equipment, including correct fitting, maintenance, and the handling of contaminated gear.
Course Durations & Eligibility
Duration: ½ Day (Ideal for minimizing site downtime or combining with another half-day compliance course).
Class Ratio: Maximum 12 Learners : 1 Instructor (Highly scalable for training entire site gangs or maintenance teams at once).
Note: This is an awareness course only. It does not qualify operatives to handle, strip, or remove asbestos.
Testing & Certification
Candidates must pass a theoretical multiple-choice exam (requiring an 80% pass mark) to demonstrate their understanding of asbestos risks and emergency procedures.
Upon successful completion, candidates will receive an NPORS card/certificate endorsing them for Asbestos Awareness (N031).
