Pallet and stacker trucks are heavily utilized in fast-paced retail warehouses, but operators frequently misjudge load centres or turn at speed, causing severe lateral instability and tip-overs. The NPORS Pallet / Stacker Truck (N008) course ensures operatives can safely manoeuvre loads, load external transport, and maintain total compliance with ACOP L117.

Description
Course Overview
This highly practical training program is an absolute must for operatives working in retail distribution centres, wholesale cash-and-carries, and busy warehouse loading bays.
Delivered either at our fully equipped Huddersfield training facility or directly within your active warehouse, this course bridges the gap between manual handling and motorized load management. Candidates will master the specific steering and braking controls (including tiller arms and pressure pads) of Rider Operated Pallet and Stacker Trucks. The training heavily emphasizes identifying longitudinal instability risks (like undercutting or braking suddenly), safely executing 90° turns, and correctly loading/unloading external transport vehicles like curtainsider lorries.
What You Will Learn
Upon successful completion, candidates will be fully competent in:
Legislation & Risk Assessment: Understanding legal obligations under PUWER, LOLER, the Health & Safety at Work Act 1974, and the L117 Approved Code of Practice.
Pre-Operational Precision: Conducting thorough daily checks on the mast, carriage, lift chains, hydraulics, wheels, and critical safety devices like the "dead man" button.
Manoeuvring & Stability: Safely traveling in open and confined areas, navigating blind corners, and understanding the specific causes of lateral and longitudinal instability.
Stacking Operations: Carrying out accurate stacking and de-stacking tasks at ground, eye, and high levels (where applicable to the truck type), including safely depositing loads in front of a vertical face.
External Transport: Safely loading and unloading lorries and trailers, communicating effectively with the HGV driver, and checking load weight distribution and security.
End of Shift: Safely parking the truck, lowering the forks, removing the key, and executing the correct battery charging procedures.
Course Durations & Eligibility
Novice Course Duration: 2 Days (Required for operators with no previous experience).
Class Ratio: Maximum 3 Learners : 1 Instructor : 1 Machine.
Existing / Untrained Operator Duration: 2 Days (13 hours of training for operators with some experience but no formal qualifications).
Refresher Course Duration: 1 Day (7.5 hours).
Experienced Worker Tests (EWT): A 1-day assessment is available for a maximum of 4 experienced operators who require formal NPORS certification.
Testing & Certification
Candidates must pass an NPORS theoretical examination containing 25 questions, requiring an 80% pass mark. They must also pass a strict practical assessment. The practical test requires candidates to drive the truck through a tight chicane forward and reverse, stack and de-stack loads at varying heights, and correctly place a load squarely within 150mm of a vertical face.
Upon successful completion, candidates will receive an NPORS Operator Card and certificate endorsing them for Pallet / Stacker Truck (N008).
