Material Re-Handlers are the absolute workhorses of scrap metal yards, ports, and busy waste transfer stations. Swinging a multi-tonne grab or heavy-duty magnet across a congested recycling centre carries a severe risk of crushing ground workers, striking transport vehicles, or rolling the machine if the stabilisers aren't properly deployed. The NPORS Material Re-Handler (N722) course transforms your workforce into highly efficient, safety-conscious operators.

Description
Course Overview
This comprehensive training program is essential for operators working in scrap metal processing, biomass, ports, and high-volume recycling centres.
Delivered either at our 84-acre Huddersfield training facility or directly at your active waste yard, this intensive course bridges the gap between basic excavator driving and specialized material processing. Candidates will master the unique characteristics of the Re-Handler, including operating height-adjustable elevating cabs and managing the aggressive swing dynamics of suspended attachments. The training heavily emphasizes segregating materials, forming safe stockpiles, and safely loading external transport vehicles or processing hoppers.
What You Will Learn
Upon successful completion, candidates will be fully competent in:
Legislation & Risk Assessment: Understanding legal obligations under PUWER, LOLER, the Health & Safety at Work Act, and navigating site-specific hazards like overhead power lines and buried services.
Pre-Operational Precision: Conducting thorough daily checks on the undercarriage, boom, dipper arms, hydraulic rams, and the complex safety systems specific to material handlers.
Manoeuvring & Stability: Safely traveling over varying terrain, adopting the correct travel position, and strictly deploying stabiliser legs before any loading commences to prevent tip-overs.
Sorting & Stockpiling: Identifying different types of materials, efficiently segregating waste, and forming stable stockpiles of around 2 metres high while maintaining a clean working area.
Attachment Mastery: Safely fitting, checking, and operating specialized attachments including grabs, magnets, log grabs, and hooks.
Loading Operations: Elevating the cab to the correct working height for optimal visibility and safely loading rear dump trucks, skips, or processing hoppers to capacity without overloading.
Course Durations & Eligibility
Novice Course Duration: 5 Days (Allowing for the intensive "seat time" required to master sorting and the swing dynamics of the grabs/magnets).
Class Ratio (Novice): Maximum 3 Learners : 1 Instructor : 1 Machine.
Experienced Worker Tests (EWT): A 1-day assessment is available for up to 4 experienced operators who require formal NPORS certification or a ticket renewal.
Testing & Certification
Candidates must pass an NPORS theoretical examination (requiring an 80% pass mark) and a rigorous 1 hour 30 minute practical assessment. The practical test requires candidates to successfully navigate restrictions, sort a minimum of 6 specific objects identified by the examiner, fill a loading vehicle to capacity, and safely change the machine's attachments.
Upon successful completion, candidates will receive an NPORS Operator Card and certificate endorsing them for Material Re-Handler (N722).
