Musculoskeletal injuries are the leading cause of lost working days in the UK construction and logistics sectors. Relying on "common sense" to move heavy materials is a fast track to debilitating back injuries, massive HSE compensation claims, and crippling downtime. The NPORS Manual Handling (N704) course completely removes this liability. It provides operatives with a deep understanding of spinal mechanics and safe lifting techniques, ensuring they can physically perform their roles safely.

      Description

      Course Overview

This rapid, half-day compliance course is an absolute must for every single person who steps foot on a construction site, warehouse floor, or delivery yard.

Delivered either in a classroom at our 84-acre Huddersfield facility or directly in your site portacabin, this highly engaging session blends human biology with practical handling techniques. Candidates will learn how to formally and dynamically assess a load before they ever touch it. The training focuses heavily on the mechanics of the human spine, the dangers of static and shock loading, and the correct application of the kinetic base lift.

      What You Will Learn

Upon successful completion, candidates will be fully competent in:

      • Legislation & Liability: Understanding their legal duties under the Health & Safety at Work Act 1974 and the Manual Handling Operations Regulations (MHOR).

      • Spinal Anatomy: Identifying the function of the human spine, intervertebral discs, and exactly how slipped discs and muscle tears occur during poor lifting.

      • Risk Assessment (T.I.L.E.O): Mastering the hierarchy of control (Avoid, Assess, Reduce) and conducting dynamic risk assessments covering the Task, Individual, Load, Environment, and Other factors.

      • Safe Handling Techniques: Executing the safe kinetic base lift, assessing the load's centre of gravity, and applying the correct pushing and pulling techniques.

      • Team Lifting & Aids: Understanding the specific risks of team lifting, communication, and correctly identifying when to use mechanical aids instead of physical force.

      Course Durations & Eligibility

      • Novice / Refresher Course Duration: 1/2 Day (Allows you to train two entirely different gangs in a single working day).

      • Class Ratio: Maximum 10 Learners : 1 Instructor.

      • Prerequisites: Candidates must sign a declaration that they do not suffer from any medical back problems that prevent them from participating in the practical lifting elements.

      Testing & Certification

Candidates must pass a 25-question NPORS theoretical examination (requiring an 80% pass mark). They must also pass a practical assessment where the instructor observes their formal risk assessment process and evaluates their execution of safe manual handling techniques in a simulated workplace environment.

Upon successful completion, candidates will receive an NPORS Operator Card and certificate endorsing them for Manual Handling (N704)
