Loading shovels are the powerhouses of earthmoving, heavily utilized in quarries and large civils projects. Operating these massive machines safely requires expert skill to prevent rollovers and crush incidents. Our NPORS Loading Shovel (N209) course equips operators to confidently handle face extractions and material stockpiling. It ensures adherence to PUWER and Quarry Regulations, maximizing safety and operational efficiency.

      Description

      Course Overview

This comprehensive training program is essential for plant operators working in quarries, waste management facilities, and major civil engineering projects.

Delivered directly on your active site using your own familiar machinery, this course bridges the gap between essential health and safety theory and heavy-duty practical application. Candidates will learn the mechanics of the machine, including oscillating chassis, safety locking devices, and hydraulic systems. The training heavily emphasizes specialized extraction techniques, including maintaining face and stockpile integrity, managing angles of repose, and safely navigating steep ramps with raised attachments.

      What You Will Learn

Upon successful completion, candidates will be fully competent in:

      • Legislation & Risk Assessment: Understanding legal obligations under PUWER, LOLER, the Road Traffic Act, and specific Quarry Regulations.

      • Pre-Operational Inspections: Locating and inspecting major components, and conducting strict daily and running checks on brakes, transmissions, and ROPS/FOPS safety systems.

      • Site Preparation: Conducting rigorous work area checks, assessing ground condition and tipping edge cracks, and setting up appropriate edge protection.

      • Machine Operation: Safely mounting the machine, executing hill starts, and managing load integrity, traction aids, and center of gravity during operation.

      • Extraction & Stockpiling: Mastering face extraction methods, spoil segregation, productive cycles, and maintaining stability with quick hitch systems.

      • End of Shift: Safely storing attachments (allowing power-driven implements to slow down) and executing correct shutdown and site security procedures.

      Course Durations & Eligibility

      • Novice Course Duration: 5 Days (Intensive training for beginners).

      • Class Ratio (Novice): Maximum 3 Learners : 1 Instructor : 1 Machine.

      • Refresher Tests: Maximum 3 tests per day.

      • Experienced Worker Tests (EWT): Maximum 6 tests per day.

      Testing & Certification

Candidates must pass an NPORS theoretical examination and a rigorous practical test. The practical assessment proves their ability to safely manoeuver the shovel, manage heavy loads, and extract materials while maintaining the integrity of the stockpile and the safety of the work area.

Upon successful completion, candidates will receive an NPORS card and certificate endorsing them for Loading Shovel (N209).
