The industrial counterbalance forklift is the backbone of the logistics, manufacturing, and construction industries. However, it is also involved in more workplace accidents than any other piece of machinery. Our NPORS Industrial Forklift Truck (C001) Novice course is an intensive, multi-day training program designed specifically for beginners with little to no prior experience. It transforms complete novices into highly competent, safety-conscious operators who strictly adhere to LOLER, PUWER, and the HSE’

Description
Course Overview
This comprehensive course takes candidates from basic familiarization all the way to complex, high-precision maneuvers.
Delivered either at our state-of-the-art Huddersfield training facility or directly on your site, this program combines classroom-based health and safety theory with extensive, hands-on practical driving time. Candidates will learn the fundamental mechanics of the forklift (including power units, hydraulic systems, and counterweights), how to configure the machine for safe travel, and how to execute precise 90° turns in confined areas. The course concludes with advanced load handling, focusing heavily on stacking, racking, and safely loading external transport vehicles.
What You Will Learn
Upon successful completion, candidates will be fully competent in:
Legislation & Responsibility: Understanding the Health & Safety at Work Act 1974, PUWER, LOLER, and the moral and legal obligations of a plant operator.
Pre-Operational Inspections: Locating and inspecting major components, and conducting strict daily checks on hydraulics, wheels/tyres, masts, and safety systems.
Manoeuvring & Stability: Moving the machine safely laden and unladen, executing pivots, and understanding both lateral stability (cornering) and longitudinal stability (when laden).
Load Dynamics: Calculating load centres, identifying the centre of gravity, understanding the capacities on de-rating plates, and compensating for the "see-saw" effect.
Stacking & Racking: Confidently stacking and transferring loads at varying heights using correct hydraulic tilt and fork spacing, while assessing racking condition (SEMA code).
External Transport: Safely loading and unloading trailers, understanding weight distribution, undercutting hazards, and effectively using banksmen/signals.
Course Durations & Eligibility
Because this is a novice course, the duration depends entirely on the number of learners to ensure maximum "seat time" on the machine:
3 Learners: 38 Hours (approx. 5 Days).
2 Learners: 30 Hours (approx. 4 Days).
1 Learner: 23 Hours (approx. 3 Days).
Class Ratio: Maximum 3 Learners : 1 Instructor : 1 Machine.
Testing & Certification
Candidates must pass a thorough NPORS theoretical examination and an intensive practical driving test. The practical test assesses their ability to conduct pre-use checks, manoeuver smoothly in confined spaces, and safely stack loads at varying heights.
Upon successful completion, candidates will receive an NPORS card and certificate endorsing them for Industrial Forklift Truck (C001).
