      Course Overview

This course is essential for plant operators and logistics personnel responsible for the safe vertical movement of materials and people on active construction sites.

Delivered either at our state-of-the-art Huddersfield training facility or directly on your active construction site, this comprehensive 1-day novice course grounds operators in essential health and safety legislation, including the Health & Safety at Work Act 1974, PUWER, and LOLER regulations. Candidates will learn to expertly handle various load types, understand the critical functions of all major components (such as interlocks, suspension devices, and travel limit switches), and respond to emergencies. The training covers Passenger (A), Goods (B), and Passenger/Goods (A/B) hoist variations.

      What You Will Learn

Upon successful completion, candidates will be competent in:

      • Pre-Start Inspections: Conducting mandatory daily checks on hoist-way enclosures, landing gates, electrical/mechanical interlocks, suspension devices (ropes, racks, and pinions), and travel limit switches.

      • Preparation & Loading: Checking the safe working capacity for loads and/or passengers, ensuring even weight distribution, and adhering to load charts and capacity plates.

      • Safe Operation: Operating the hoist to all levels safely loaded and unloaded, accurately stopping at correct landing points, and showing due regard to passenger safety.

      • Emergency Procedures: Understanding procedures to be adopted for emergency loading/unloading and the operation of emergency lowering devices.

      • Communication: Understanding and utilizing agreed signal codes and communication methods with colleagues and management.

      • End of Shift: Safely parking the hoist, removing the key, isolating the mains supply, and executing proper defect reporting.

      Course Durations & Eligibility

      • Novice Course Duration: 1 Day.

      • Class Ratio (Novice): Maximum 4 Learners : 1 Instructor : 1 Machine.

      • Refresher Tests: Maximum 4 tests per day.

      • Experienced Worker Tests (EWT): Maximum 6 tests per day.

      Testing & Certification

Candidates must pass a 25-question theoretical exam (requiring an 80% pass mark) and a rigorous practical assessment. The practical test mandates safe operation, strict adherence to signals, and accurate pre-use inspection of mandatory components like electrical/mechanical interlocks.

Upon successful completion, candidates will receive an NPORS card and certificate endorsing them for Hoist (N111) operation, specific to Passenger, Goods, or Passenger/Goods.
