Winter maintenance operations are critical for keeping infrastructure moving, but they present unique challenges, from operating in sub-zero temperatures and low visibility to managing heavy, offset loads. Our NPORS Gritter & Snowplough (N802) course provides operators with the specialized skills needed to master these machines. You will learn to manage brine and salt distribution effectively while navigating specialized attachments like snowploughs with total safety and precision.

Description
Course Overview
This course is designed for individuals working in highway maintenance, local authorities, or private facilities management who are responsible for winter road safety. Operating a gritter or snowplough requires high levels of situational awareness and technical control of the machine’s specific auxiliary systems.
At our centre, candidates receive comprehensive hands-on training, progressing from basic vehicle familiarisation to advanced operational competence. The curriculum covers the physics of offset loads (ploughs), the calibration of spreading equipment, and the legal responsibilities of an operator under HASAWA, PUWER, and the Road Traffic Act.
What You Will Learn
Upon successful completion, candidates will be competent in:
Machine Mechanics: Identifying major components and understanding the function of spreading and ploughing mechanisms.
Pre-Operational Safety: Conducting statutory checks on hydraulics, lights, beacons, and attachment security in accordance with legislative requirements.
Attachment Mastery: Safely fitting, setting, and removing snowploughs and ensuring the integrity of gritter hopper systems.
Operational Precision: Mastering calibration for salt/grit distribution and managing the machine safely in low-visibility or icy conditions.
Stability & Maneuvering: Understanding how the weight of brine/salt and the leverage of a plough affect machine stability and braking.
Hazard Awareness: Managing proximity hazards to the public and property during wide-sweep ploughing or spreading.
Shutdown Procedures: Executing correct cleaning (to avoid salt corrosion), shutdown, and securement protocols.
Course Durations & Eligibility
Novice Duration: 2 Days.
Refresher / Experienced Worker Tests (EWT): 1 Day.
Class Ratio: Maximum 3 Learners : 1 Instructor : 1 Machine.
Testing & Certification
Candidates must pass a theoretical multiple-choice exam and a rigorous practical assessment demonstrating safe setup, operation, and discharge procedures.
Upon successful completion, candidates will receive an NPORS card and certificate endorsing them for Gritter & Snowplough (N802).
