Working in high-risk confined spaces—such as deep vertical shafts, complex tunnelling, or toxic storage tanks—presents life-threatening hazards including explosive atmospheres, sudden flooding, and oxygen depletion. Our NPORS Confined Spaces - High Risk (N702HR) course equips your operatives with the advanced skills required to enter, traverse, and safely manage high-risk environments using Self-Contained Breathing Apparatus (SCBA).

Description
Course Overview
This is not a basic awareness course. High-Risk entry involves environments where a specified risk cannot be eliminated, requiring the use of full working breathing apparatus and complex traverse rescue procedures.
Over 3 days, candidates will be trained to strictly manage Health and Safety regulations, perform detailed gas detection and monitoring, and implement robust Safe Systems of Work (SSOW). The course heavily emphasizes the critical role of the "Top-Person" in controlling access, managing man-riding hoists/tripods, and initiating emergency rescue plans.
What You Will Learn
Upon successful completion, candidates will be competent in:
- Risk Assessment & SSOW: Producing and implementing detailed risk assessments and safe systems of work for high-risk entries.
- Hazardous Atmospheres: Using gas detection equipment, understanding $O^{2}$ depletion/enrichment, and managing toxic/flammable atmospheres.
- Access Equipment: Pre-use inspection and operation of safety harnesses, fall arrest systems, tripods, and winches.
- Breathing Apparatus: Rigorous training in the inspection, donning, and operation of both Emergency Escape Breathing Apparatus (EEBA) and Self-Contained Breathing Apparatus (SCBA).
- Traverse Procedures: Executing complex horizontal/vertical entries and understanding rescue planning and liaison with emergency services.
- Top-Person Duties: Verifying isolations, establishing safety zones, and maintaining continuous communication and emergency readiness from the outside.
Course Durations & Eligibility
- Novice Duration: 3 Days.
- Class Ratio: Maximum 6 Learners : 1 Instructor.
- 2-Day Refresher courses are also available.
Testing & Certification
Candidates must complete a 30-question theoretical exam (80% pass mark) and a highly practical assessment. The practical test requires delegates to demonstrate competence in using SCBA, setting up ventilation and gas detection, and executing a safe traverse entry and emergency evacuation procedure.
