Working in ports, rail yards, and logistics hubs requires the precise lifting and stacking of massive, multi-ton shipping containers. Our NPORS Container Handler (N012) course equips operators with the specialized skills needed to safely drive, configure, and stack using heavy-duty container handling trucks, ensuring maximum efficiency and strict compliance with LOLER regulations.

      Description

      Course Overview

A container handler operates in highly congested, high-pressure environments. A single error in load assessment, boom extension, or stacking alignment can lead to catastrophic tip-overs (both lateral and longitudinal) or severe collisions.

This comprehensive course teaches operators how to maintain machine stability while travelling laden and unladen, safely operate hydraulic controls at height, and communicate effectively with transport drivers and banksmen. Through rigorous practical training, candidates will master the bulk stacking of 20ft and 40ft containers and safely load and unload external transport vehicles.

      What You Will Learn

Upon successful completion, candidates will be competent in:

      • Machine Operations: Locating and identifying major components, including the mast, boom, carriage, and specialized container attachments.
      • Pre-Use Inspections: Checking interlocks, safe load indicators (SLI), chains, and hydraulic fluid levels before commencing work.
      • Safe Manoeuvring: Driving the machine safely over varying terrain and inclines, and executing precise turns laden and unladen.
      • Lifting & Stacking: Accurately locking onto loads, managing correct tilt, and bulk stacking 20' and 40' containers up to four stacks high.
      • Vehicle Loading: Safely loading and unloading lorries, trailers, or rail wagons while managing weight distribution and ground hazards.
      • Attachment Adjustment: Fitting, adjusting, and removing attachments while understanding load centres and capacity de-rating.

      Course Durations & Eligibility

      • Novice Duration: 5 Days.
      • Class Ratio: Maximum 3 Learners : 1 Instructor : 1 Machine.
      • Refresher courses (1 Day) and Experienced Worker Tests are also available.

      Testing & Certification

Candidates must pass a theoretical multiple-choice exam (80% pass mark) covering stability and legislation, followed by a strict practical assessment. The practical test includes safely stacking/de-stacking loads at various heights and navigating a confined chicane without touching the course boundaries.
