Compact cranes (often called Spider Cranes) are the ultimate lifting solution for confined spaces, indoor construction, and complex glazing projects. However, despite their small footprint, they present the exact same high-risk tipping and lifting hazards as standard mobile cranes. Our NPORS Compact Crane (N140) course ensures operators are fully competent in deploying outriggers, programming load indicators, and executing precision lifts safely in accordance with LOLER and BS 7121 regulations.

      Description

      Course Overview

Operating a compact crane requires a deep understanding of lifting physics, ground-bearing pressures, and complex machine configuration. Because these machines are often deployed inside finished buildings, on rooftops, or in tight urban alleys, the margin for error is zero.

This comprehensive 5-day course transforms novice operators into highly skilled lifting professionals. Candidates will learn how to read duty charts and lifting plans, safely deploy complex outrigger systems, and correctly program the Rated Capacity Indicator (RCI) / Load Moment Indicator (LMI). Through rigorous practical training, operatives will master blind lifts, counteracting load swings, and executing "pick and carry" duties where applicable.

      What You Will Learn

Upon successful completion, candidates will be competent in:

      • Machine Configuration: Understanding the mechanics of telescopic jibs, hydraulic outriggers, tracks, hoist ropes, and hook blocks.

      • Pre-Use Inspections: Conducting daily statutory checks on all safety systems, lifting tackle, and verifying test certificates/thorough examination reports.

      • Safe Lifting Planning: Reading lift plans, understanding duty/ground loading charts, calculating footprint bearing pressures, and setting up secure exclusion zones.

      • Precision Operation: Programming the RCI/LMI for different load duties, leveling the crane on inclines, and smoothly operating lifting/slewing controls in confined spaces.

      • Advanced Lifting Maneuvers: Executing lifts of at least 75% of the crane’s capacity, lifting tubular structures, counteracting load swings, and performing complex "blind lifts" using radio/hand signals from a Slinger.

      • Shutdown & De-Rigging: Safely dismantling extension jibs, stowing the boom in the correct sequence, and securing the crane for transport.

      Course Durations & Eligibility

      • Novice Duration: 5 Days (Intensive training required for candidates with no prior crane experience).

      • Class Ratio: Maximum 3 Learners : 1 Instructor : 1 Machine (Ensuring maximum seat-time and direct supervision).

      • Experienced Worker Tests (EWT) and 1 to 3-day conversion courses are available for existing plant operators.

      Testing & Certification

Candidates must pass a rigorous theoretical exam (80% pass mark) covering LOLER and crane legislation. This is followed by an extensive practical assessment where the candidate must independently configure the crane, set the RCI, and complete multiple precision lifts (including a blind lift) under the direction of a Slinger/Signaller.

Upon successful completion, candidates will receive an NPORS card/certificate endorsing them for Compact Crane (N140).
