The circular saw is a staple tool on almost every construction and joinery site, but its speed and power make it highly dangerous in untrained hands. Severe lacerations, amputations, and kickback incidents are far too common. Our NPORS Circular Saw (N303) course provides operators with the essential skills to safely configure, inspect, and operate a circular saw, ensuring full compliance with PUWER and the safe management of hazardous wood dust.

Description
Course Overview
Cutting timber efficiently and safely requires a firm understanding of the tool's mechanics and the legislative requirements surrounding woodworking equipment (including PUWER and HSE Approved Code of Practice L114).
This highly practical 1-day course is designed for carpenters, shopfitters, and general construction operatives. Candidates will learn how to properly inspect the blade and safety guards, adjust the riving knife, and safely secure materials before cutting. Crucially, the training emphasizes how to execute various cuts without exposing the operator to severe kickback, noise-induced hearing loss, or the long-term respiratory dangers of wood dust inhalation.
What You Will Learn
Upon successful completion, candidates will be competent in:
Pre-Operational Safety: Inspecting power cables, start/stop switches, isolators, and ensuring the blade, guards, and riving knife are set to the correct specified limits.
Safe Cutting Techniques: Properly clamping and securing materials, adjusting fences and angles for various cuts, and maintaining safe hand positioning (ensuring push sticks are used when within 300mm of the blade).
Hazard Management: Setting up safe exclusion zones to protect the public and site workers, and understanding the physical risks of noise, vibration, and flying debris.
Health & PPE: Correctly identifying and using mandatory Personal and Respiratory Protective Equipment (PPE/RPE) to mitigate the risks of inhaling carcinogenic wood dust.
Dust Extraction: Ensuring extraction systems are fully functional and adequate for the task at hand.
Shutdown & Maintenance: Safely isolating the power source, safely storing spare blades/dado cutters, and clearing the work floor of combustible sawdust and trip hazards at the end of a shift.
Course Durations & Eligibility
Novice Duration: 1 Day
Class Ratio: Maximum 6 Learners : 1 Instructor : 1 Machine (Ideal for training an entire site gang or workshop team in a single session).
Refresher courses are also available.
Testing & Certification
Candidates must pass a theoretical multiple-choice exam (80% pass mark) covering health and safety legislation, followed by a rigorous practical assessment. The practical test requires candidates to demonstrate safe pre-use checks, make appropriate adjustments to the blade/fences, and safely execute a minimum of 4 different cuts while properly using extraction systems and push sticks.
Upon successful completion, candidates will receive an NPORS card/certificate endorsing them for Circular Saw (N303).
