Road surfacing is a high-risk, fast-paced environment where precision and safety are equally critical. Our NPORS Asphalt Chipper Spreader (N244) course provides operators with the highly specialized skills needed to safely manoeuver, configure, and operate chipper spreaders. Ensure your workforce can lay accurate, even chip surfaces while seamlessly coordinating with tipper trucks and navigating complex, live roadwork environments.

      Description

      Course Overview

Operating an Asphalt Chipper Spreader requires immense coordination. Operators must not only manage the complex hydraulic gates, hoppers, and conveyors of the machine itself, but they must also act in perfect tandem with reversing transport vehicles delivering the hot materials—often within the highly confined safety barriers of live dual carriageways or A-roads.

This course ensures your surfacing gangs are fully compliant with PUWER regulations and the Road Traffic Act. Candidates will receive hands-on training that covers everything from crucial pre-use safety inspections and hitching procedures to the precise adjustment of spread depths and line speeds, ensuring a flawless road surface and maximum site safety.

      What You Will Learn

Upon successful completion, candidates will be competent in:

      • Machine Familiarisation: Understanding the mechanical and hydraulic systems, including hopper gates, conveyor systems, control paddles, and towing/hitching devices.

      • Pre-Operational Checks: Conducting rigorous daily checks on hydraulics, brakes, electrical connections, and ensuring the hopper and paddle systems are free of hardened residue.

      • Work Area & Highway Prep: Setting up the machine safely within roadwork barriers and checking the work area for debris, contamination, and buried/overhead hazards.

      • Precision Spreading: Setting screw/hydraulics to the correct depth, maintaining correct line speed alongside road guides, and spreading chips evenly to the exact job specifications (length, width, thickness).

      • Vehicle Coordination: Safely receiving hot materials from reversing transport vehicles/tippers using clear communication and banking signals.

      • Transportation & Shutdown: Correctly cleaning residue from the equipment to prevent damage, maneuvering the spreader onto a trailer, or securely hitching it to a towing vehicle at the end of the shift.

      Course Durations & Eligibility

      • Novice Duration: 2 Days (For delegates with no prior surfacing/plant experience).

      • Class Ratio: Maximum 3 Learners : 1 Instructor : 1 Machine (Ensuring maximum hands-on operational time).

      • Equipment Variations: This course covers both Self-Propelled (A) and Vehicle-Mounted (B) spreaders.

      • Experienced Worker Tests (EWT) and Refresher courses are also available.

      Testing & Certification

Candidates must pass a theoretical exam (80% pass mark) and a rigorous practical assessment. The practical test involves setting up the machine, successfully receiving materials, and demonstrating an accurate, controlled spreading run.

Upon successful completion, candidates will receive an NPORS card/certificate endorsing them for Asphalt Chipper Spreader (N244).
