Every lifting operation on a construction site requires precise planning, strict safety protocols, and a legally designated Appointed Person to oversee it all. Our NPORS Appointed Person (N401) course equips site managers, lifting supervisors, and experienced crane operatives with the advanced knowledge and legislative understanding required to safely plan, document, and manage basic, standard, and complex lifting operations.

Description
Course Overview
Under the Lifting Operations and Lifting Equipment Regulations 1998 (LOLER) and BS 7121 guidelines, it is a strict legal requirement that every lifting operation is planned by a competent "Appointed Person." This highly responsible role is critical to preventing catastrophic crane failures, structural damage, and severe on-site injuries.
This intensive 5-day course moves beyond physical machine operation and deep-dives into site engineering, physics, and legal compliance. Candidates will learn how to read complex crane duty charts, calculate outrigger ground bearing pressures, size spreader mats, select appropriate cranes for specific environments, and draft robust, legally compliant Lift Plans and Risk Assessments.
What You Will Learn
Upon successful completion, candidates will be competent in:
Legal & Legislative Responsibilities: Gaining a full understanding of LOLER, PUWER, BS 7121 (Parts 1-5), and Working at Height regulations.
Lift Planning & Documentation: Categorizing lifts (Basic, Standard, Complex, Lifting Persons) and writing comprehensive Lift Plans, Method Statements, and Risk Assessments.
Physics & Calculations: Accurately calculating load weights, centres of gravity, sling angles/sizes, and complex outrigger point loadings.
Crane Selection & Setup: Reading crane duty charts, range diagrams, and specification sheets to select the correct lifting equipment (Mobile, Crawler, Tower, Lorry Loader, etc.) for the job.
Site & Hazard Management: Identifying proximity hazards (like overhead powerlines), planning exclusion zones, and understanding the legal notification process for Highway, Railway, and Airport authorities.
Equipment Inspection: Understanding WLL (Working Load Limit), SWL (Safe Working Load), and the statutory thorough examination and testing requirements for lifting accessories.
Course Durations & Eligibility
Novice Duration: 5 Days (Intensive classroom and theoretical planning-based learning).
Class Ratio: Maximum 6 Learners : 1 Instructor (Ensuring deep, focused learning on complex mathematical calculations).
1-Day Refresher courses are also available for existing Appointed Persons needing to renew their certification.
Testing & Certification
Candidates must pass an extensive theoretical assessment, requiring an in-depth understanding of lifting legislation, mathematical load calculations, and the physical completion of a comprehensive Lift Plan and Risk Assessment based on a provided real-world site scenario.
Upon successful completion, candidates will receive an NPORS card/certificate endorsing them as an Appointed Person (N401).
