Sit-in All-Terrain Vehicles (also known as UTVs, Side-by-Sides, or Buggies) are the ultimate workhorses for large-scale sites, festivals, agriculture, and forestry. However, navigating unpredictable ground conditions with a loaded cargo bed or trailer requires specific off-road driving skills. Our NPORS (N608b) course ensures your operatives know how to safely handle these machines, utilize their safety features, and manage hazardous terrain without risking a rollover or vehicle damage.

Description
Course Overview
While Sit-In ATVs offer greater protection than traditional quad bikes (due to their cabs and Roll-Over Protective Structures), they carry heavier payloads and respond differently to steep inclines and side slopes. This course ensures your workforce is fully compliant with PUWER regulations, the Road Traffic Act, and specific ATV safety guidelines.
Designed for commercial site workers, groundskeepers, and agricultural staff, this hands-on training takes drivers through the mechanical theory of the vehicle and advanced maneuvering techniques. Candidates will learn how to properly use powered braking, safely execute hill starts, recover from failed hill climbs, and securely couple and tow trailers across challenging off-road terrain.
What You Will Learn
Upon successful completion, candidates will be competent in:
Pre-Use Checks & Safety Systems: Conducting rigorous daily checks on brakes, steering, suspension, fluid levels, and specifically checking cab integrity, seat belts, and ROPS (Roll-Over Protective Structures).
Safe Off-Road Operation: Mastering correct driving posture, emergency stops, and understanding the machine's ground clearance limits over obstacles.
Advanced Terrain Navigation: Safely executing hill starts, "failed hill climb" recoveries, and traversing uphill, downhill, and side slopes using appropriate speeds and powered braking.
Load & Trailer Management: Understanding the limits of load beds, correctly coupling trailers, and maneuvering safely in forward and reverse while fully laden on uneven ground.
Transportation: Safely loading, securing (using appropriate retention devices and anchorage points), and unloading the UTV from a transport vehicle or larger trailer.
Environmental & Hazard Control: Navigating safely around site personnel and managing environmental impacts like ground damage and fuel spills.
Course Durations & Eligibility
Novice Duration: 2 Days (For delegates with no prior UTV/Off-Road experience).
Class Ratio: Maximum 3 Learners : 1 Instructor : 1 Machine (Ensuring highly focused, practical seat-time).
Experienced Worker Tests (EWT) and Refresher courses are also available.
Testing & Certification
Candidates must pass a theoretical multiple-choice exam (80% pass mark) and a highly practical driving assessment. The practical test requires candidates to navigate a varied off-road terrain course, successfully execute hill maneouvers, manage a loaded cargo bed/trailer, and demonstrate safe loading onto a transport vehicle.
Upon successful completion, candidates will receive an NPORS card/certificate endorsing them for All-Terrain Vehicles (N608b).
