All-Terrain Vehicles (ATVs), such as quad bikes and utility task vehicles (UTVs), are essential for navigating large sites, farms, and forestry projects. However, they are also associated with a high rate of severe rollover accidents when operated incorrectly. Our NPORS All-Terrain Vehicles (N608c) course provides operators with the critical skills needed to read challenging terrain, manage loads, and operate ATVs safely and efficiently in diverse ground conditions

      Description

      Course Overview

Driving an ATV off-road requires active rider participation and a deep understanding of weight distribution, especially when navigating slopes or carrying heavy loads. This comprehensive course ensures your workforce is fully compliant with PUWER regulations, the Road Traffic Act (where applicable), and the All-Terrain Motor Vehicles (Safety) Regulations.

Designed for both agricultural and commercial site workers, this training covers the mechanical theory of the vehicle, proper rider posture, and advanced maneuvering techniques. Candidates will learn how to safely ascend, descend, and traverse steep slopes, perform emergency stops, and securely couple and tow trailers across uneven ground.

      What You Will Learn

Upon successful completion, candidates will be competent in:

      • Pre-Use Checks & PPE: Identifying mandatory safety gear (including certified crash helmets) and conducting rigorous checks on brakes, steering, fluid levels, suspension, and tires/tracks.

      • Safe Operation & Posture: Mastering correct rider posture for weight shifting on uneven terrain, performing emergency stops, and understanding ground clearance limits.

      • Advanced Terrain Navigation: Safely executing hill starts, aborted hill climbs (stall recovery), and traversing uphill, downhill, and side slopes without risking a rollover.

      • Load & Trailer Management: Understanding the limits of load racks/beds, correctly coupling trailers, and maneuvering safely in forward and reverse while fully laden.

      • Transportation: Safely loading, securing (using appropriate retention devices), and unloading the ATV from a transport vehicle or larger trailer.

      • Environmental & Hazard Control: Navigating safely around site personnel, animals, and managing environmental impacts like ground damage and fuel spills.

      Course Durations & Eligibility

      • Novice Duration: 2 Days (For delegates with no prior ATV experience).

      • Class Ratio: Maximum 3 Learners : 1 Instructor : 1 Machine (Ensuring highly focused, practical training).

      • Experienced Worker Tests (EWT) and Refresher courses are also available.

      Testing & Certification

Candidates must pass a theoretical multiple-choice exam (80% pass mark) and a highly practical driving assessment. The practical test requires candidates to navigate a varied terrain course, successfully execute hill maneuvers, manage a loaded trailer, and demonstrate safe loading onto a transport vehicle.

Upon successful completion, candidates will receive an NPORS card/certificate endorsing them for All-Terrain Vehicles (N608c).
