Modern agricultural tractors are highly versatile, powerful machines used far beyond the farm—they are essential on construction sites, forestry projects, and large-scale landscaping jobs. Our NPORS Agricultural Tractor (N601) course provides operators with the comprehensive skills needed to safely operate, manoeuvre, and maintain these machines, including the safe attachment and use of various trailed and PTO-driven implements

Description
Course Overview
Driving a tractor in an open field is one thing, but operating a fully loaded tractor and trailer combination safely around a busy construction site, uneven terrain, or public highways requires a high level of skill and compliance. This course is designed to ensure operators understand their legal responsibilities under PUWER and LOLER regulations, as well as the Road Traffic Act where applicable.
Candidates will receive hands-on training that covers everything from daily maintenance and cab safety to coupling complex attachments, managing ground pressure, and executing precision maneuvers in confined spaces.
What You Will Learn
Upon successful completion, candidates will be competent in:
Machine Familiarisation: Understanding the power units, hydraulic systems, transmissions, ROPS/FOPS (Roll-Over/Falling Object Protective Structures), and braking systems.
Pre-Operational Checks: Conducting daily checks on tires, fluid levels, rams, pipes, and PTO (Power Take-Off) guards.
Safe Manoeuvring: Driving the tractor and trailer through confined chicanes, reversing accurately, and operating safely on slopes, inclines, and uneven ground.
Attachments & Implements: Safely aligning, hitching, and connecting trailers, 3-point linkage systems, and PTO-driven attachments (such as grass cutters, compressors, or winches).
Environmental & Hazard Control: Managing site hazards, overhead powerlines, ground damage, noise, and vibration.
Shutdown & Storage: Safely uncoupling heavy implements, relieving hydraulic pressure, and correctly securing the machine at the end of a shift.
Course Durations & Eligibility
Novice Duration: 3 Days (For delegates with little to no prior experience).
Class Ratio: Maximum 3 Learners : 1 Instructor : 1 Machine (Ensuring maximum seat time for every candidate).
Experienced Worker Tests (EWT) and Refresher courses are also available.
Testing & Certification
To achieve certification, candidates must successfully pass a theoretical multiple-choice exam (80% pass mark) and a rigorous practical test. The practical assessment involves pre-use checks, coupling a trailer/implement, and navigating a set off-road course (including reversing and operating on inclines) without compromising safety.
Upon successful completion, candidates will receive an NPORS card/certificate endorsing them for Agricultural Tractor (N601).
