Abrasive wheels are used across almost every sector of construction and manufacturing, but they present significant hazards, including wheel shatter, severe kickback, and hazardous dust inhalation. Our NPORS Abrasive Wheels (N301) course provides your workforce with the essential knowledge and practical skills to safely inspect, mount, dress, and operate various types of abrasive wheel equipment, ensuring full compliance with health and safety legislation.

      Description

      Course Overview

Improper use or incorrect mounting of an abrasive wheel can lead to catastrophic equipment failure and severe injury. This comprehensive course is designed to ensure operators understand the critical safety requirements under the Provision and Use of Work Equipment Regulations (PUWER) and COSHH.

Unlike tool-specific courses, this training covers a broad spectrum of equipment. Whether your team uses bench-mounted grinders, hand-held angle grinders, or petrol/electric cutting-off machines, they will learn how to read wheel markings, identify damage, correctly change wheels, and perform safe cutting or grinding operations while mitigating risks like noise, vibration, and crystalline silica dust.

      What You Will Learn

Upon successful completion, candidates will be competent in:

      • Wheel Identification & Selection: Understanding abrasive wheel markings (speed, size, expiry) and selecting the correct wheel class (e.g., straight-sided, depressed center, diamond-tipped) for the task.

      • Pre-Start Inspections: Conducting vital checks on the machine (wiring, guards, spindle speed, tool rests) and the wheels (cracks, damage, blotters).

      • Mounting & Dressing: Safely changing grinding wheels or discs, ensuring correct flange and washer placement, and dressing/balancing bench-mounted wheels.

      • Safe Operation: Executing controlled cutting or grinding tasks while maintaining safe footing and using correct machine rests.

      • Hazard & Environmental Management: Setting up exclusion zones, managing sparks and flying debris, and understanding the risks of noise and vibration.

      • PPE & Health Safety: Correctly utilizing mandatory PPE, including impact-rated eye protection and respiratory masks to protect against dust hazards.

      Course Durations & Eligibility

      • Novice Duration: ½ Day (N301A) or 1 Day (N301) depending on the complexity and variety of machines being covered.

      • Class Ratio: Maximum 6 Learners

      Testing & Certification

Candidates must pass a theoretical multiple-choice exam (80% pass mark) and a practical assessment demonstrating safe wheel changing, machine inspection, and a controlled cutting/grinding operation.

Upon successful completion, candidates will receive an NPORS card/certificate endorsing them for Abrasive Wheels (N301).
