Driving a 4x4 on a paved road is entirely different from navigating steep, uneven, and hazardous terrain on a busy site. Our NPORS 4x4 Off-Road Vehicle training ensures that your team knows how to maximize the capability of their vehicles without putting themselves, the environment, or the equipment at risk. From engaging differential locks to executing safe hill descents, we teach your operatives how to handle the toughest conditions safely.

Description
Course Overview
Many companies supply their staff with high-capability 4x4s (like Toyota Hiluxes, Land Rover Defenders, or Ford Rangers) to access remote sites in construction, utilities, forestry, or agriculture. However, lacking the proper off-road driving techniques often leads to severe vehicle damage, getting bogged down, or dangerous rollover incidents.
This intensive, hands-on course takes drivers out of their comfort zone and into the mud. Candidates will learn the mechanical theory behind four-wheel drive systems, how to correctly read terrain, and the practical skills required to conquer steep inclines, deep ruts, and slippery surfaces safely.
What You Will Learn
Upon successful completion, candidates will be competent in:
Vehicle Preparation: Conducting rigorous pre-use checks specific to off-roading, including under-body clearance, tire pressures, and fluid levels.
Understanding the Tech: Knowing exactly when (and how) to use High/Low range gears, differential locks, and traction control systems.
Reading the Terrain: Assessing ground conditions, approach/departure angles, and identifying hidden hazards before driving.
Advanced Driving Techniques: Mastering safe hill ascents, controlled descents (without relying on the brake pedal), navigating side-slopes, and driving through deep ruts or water.
Stall Recovery: Executing the standard "failed hill climb" recovery procedure safely.
Environmental Protection: Driving in a way that minimizes ground damage and ecological impact.
Course Durations & Eligibility
Prerequisite: Candidates must hold a valid UK standard car driving license (Category B).
Novice Duration: 1 to 2 Days (Depending on prior experience and terrain complexity).
Class Ratio: Maximum 3 Learners : 1 Instructor : 1 Vehicle (Ensuring maximum time behind the wheel).
Experienced Worker Tests and Refresher courses are also available.
Testing & Certification
Candidates must pass both a theoretical multiple-choice exam (80% pass mark) and a highly practical driving assessment across a recognized off-road course, demonstrating safe control of the vehicle in various hazardous scenarios.
Upon successful completion, candidates will receive an NPORS card/certificate endorsing them for 4x4 Off-Road Vehicle Operation
