Shunter Vehicle

The term "Shunter Vehicle" actually describes two very different types of specialized industrial vehicles that share the same name but operate in distinct environments: railways and road logistics yards.

1. Railway Shunter (Shunting Locomotive)
This is the traditional definition. A shunter (or switcher) is a small locomotive used to move railway cars around within a yard or terminal, not to make long-distance trips

2. Road-Rail Shunter
A specific type of shunting vehicle that is a "two-way" or "road-rail" vehicle. It is capable of switching from moving on roads (rubber tires) to running on rails (steel wheels)

3. Shunter Trucks (Yard/Spotter Trucks)
In the logistics and freight industry, a shunter truck refers to a terminal tractor or spotter truck

COURSE DESCRIPTION

Shunter Vehicle

➢ Have a basic understanding of the industry, the dangers of working in the industry and their responsibilities as an operator
➢ Have a working knowledge of the manufacturer’s handbook for the particular machine to be used
➢ Be able to locate and identify the major components of the machine and explain their functions
➢ Conduct all pre-operational checks in accordance with manufacturer’s and legislative requirements
➢ Identify and maintain PPE appropriate for Shunter Vehicle use
➢ Conduct all necessary safety checks at the work area
➢ Prepare the Shunter Vehicle for use and operate machinery safely and efficiently
➢ Attach and set trailers ready for operation
➢ Environmental considerations
➢ Transport and uncouple Shunter Vehicle attachments
➢ Carry out all end of work and shut down procedures
